Saturday, June 23, 2018- Happy 1.5 Birthday, Teddy!
Our last full day of our vacation! What an amazing trip!!! Today Teddy woke up rather early (this seems to be becoming a habit...) but it was okay because that gave us an earlier start on cleaning the cottage and heading out of town. We were able to clean up and load up by 8:30 to head our trek back toward Boston. Dad has done all the driving this trip so Thom, Teddy, and I were able to catch up on a little sleep while we drove. Our only stop on our drive back was the Portland Head Light.
Portland Head Light was built under the directive of President George Washington and was completed in 1791 using a fund of $1,500, established by him. It is the oldest head light in the state of Maine (and the most beautiful one we saw). We had intended on stopping at the Portland Head Light on our way to Acadia, but it was raining so we chose to skip it; I am glad we decided to stop by on our way back through. It was absolutely beautiful. The sky was partially cloudy which created some perfect photos. We didn't do the museum, but walked around the head light area. It was a quick stop, but a much worthwhile one.
After a quick stop at Wendy's for lunch we were back on the road. Sidenote: Wendy's kids meals offer fresh strawberries and blueberries--it was perfect for Teddy!
Once we got back into Boston we headed toward our hotel. Dad and Mom needed to return the van and Thom, Teddy, and I wanted to get the stamps that we missed for the National Parks Passport. We didn't know they existed until we were in Acadia and realized we missed one for the Freedom Trail. Luckily, Dad and Mom dropped the three of us off at the subway before returning the car so we headed into downtown. Mom and Dad had no difficulty returning the van and were able to walk through Harvard on their way back to the subway. Thom, Teddy, and I made it to Faneuil Hall in time to get our stamps. They didn't have a specific Freedom Trail Sticker so we purchased a Boston one for Teddy, our, and Dad's passport books. After walking through Quincy Market we met up with Mom and Dad for dinner at the Green Dragon Tavern.
We got to the Green Dragon Tavern at a good time, before the crowd, and had great seats. Dad ordered calamari for an appetizer because we hadn't had it yet on the trip. Everyone liked the calamari, even Teddy! Everyone's dinner looked and tasted great! I had fish and chips--it was a huge serving!! Thom got a rueben (he said it might be the best one he's ever had). Mom had a nice green salad with chicken, and Dad got a mixed grill plate that had Italian sausage, ham, steak, bacon and more! Some men sat next to us, who Teddy became friends with through fist bumps, and we discovered that they went to St. Ambrose and one was from DeWitt, near where Thom is from. After more discussion we found out that they played soccer with one of mom's friend's (my first grade teacher) son. Small world and very nice people.
After dinner it was time to head back to the hotel. This hotel has a shuttle that takes you from the subway to the hotel because it isn't within walking distance. It leaves every 30 minutes and we made it by just 2 minutes! It was a close one, but we made it!
The weather has been absolutely perfect this entire trip. The two times we encountered rain were when we were driving. It wasn't buggy, muggy, or hot; it could not have been more perfect. Tonight was probably the "worst" weather we have had and it was sweatshirt weather with a little fog and mist in the air; we have been incredibly lucky.
As I sit on the bathroom floor in the hotel waiting for Teddy to fall asleep while Mom, Dad, and Thom are hanging out in the lobby, I reflect back on the trip and don't think it could have been any greater. Teddy was a trooper the entire time (although I do think he will sleep well when we get home). I have enjoyed this trip immensely. We leave tomorrow morning to head back home, so until next time...
